Beautiful mountains, lush green fields, and crisp, calm water surrounded Ben and Dee on their big day. The grounds of The Europe Hotel in Ireland created the perfect, romantic ambience for the couple to exchange vows. The bride wore a lace gown, and the groom dressed in a royal blue tuxedo. Their breathtaking surroundings and elegant attire allowed for truly astonishing photos by Katie Farrell Photography. Though their day was full of serious beauty, the couple added light-hearted jokes to their vows and offered guests a day filled with ice cream and other fun sweet treats. We absolutely love this gorgeous wedding!

The Couple:

Ben and Dee

The Wedding:

The Europe Hotel, Killarney, Ireland

The Inspiration:

We wanted the day to feel relaxed and to be full of colour, yet remain simple and non-fussy throughout. We wanted to bring a modern feel to the traditional wedding by adding colour to as much as we could without going overboard, therefore keeping an easy sense of style to the occasion. This theme carried over into the wedding dress, which was beautifully elegant, and the bridesmaids dresses, which were completely unique, mixing a strong sense of style and colour, offering a look that was also very non-traditional. The Groomsmen all wore different shades of blue to complement the bridesmaids dresses, but also to work well with the Groom’s royal blue tuxedo, that took a modern twist on a classic look. Our favourite flower is the Gerbera, which exemplified everything about our vision for the day – vibrantly colourful, simple yet elegant at the same time. The most important thing was that we wanted the day to reflect us and our personalities, not traditions or conformities.

The Moments:

The ceremony itself, as it was the first time we got to share the room with each other alongside all of our favourite people. There was so much happiness in the room, you could literally feel it, it was a wonderful moment. On top of that we said our own vows adding a little humour into the moment, which our friends seemed to enjoy as much as we did!

The Couple Recommends:

David Cronin and his team at The Europe Hotel were absolutely incredible, with no detail missed and no request being too much trouble. They were extremely accommodating and so easy to deal with that we felt that they wanted us to be there a much as we did.

Katie’s incredibly beautiful beaded dress came from Folkster Bridal. I’m absolutely in love with all of their bridalware, so I’m sure Katie found it difficult to pick just one!

“Although we are both from Kildare, we met on a night out in Kilkenny over nine years ago. We were both there for the Bank Holiday weekend with our friends. In Kytelers Inn, James happened to be standing in my way to the bar! After (kindly) asking him to move, chatting ensued, numbers were swapped and… the rest is history.”

Flowers? Check. Vintage milk pail? Check. Okay, sounds like they’ve covered all of the wedding essentials…!

How cute are these cookies? Almost too pretty to eat (but I’d eat them anyway because they look delicious!).

When it came to the proposal, James knew how to do it! He took a location and activity they already loved and made it extra special. “We both love to hike and our favourite route is The Spinc in Glendalough. To make the most of a gorgeous summer’s day we set off on a hike. When we reached the top of the valley, at our usual picnic spot, James bent down and started rooting around in the bag. I assumed he was organising the picnic, but instead he pulled out a ring. The beautiful and familiar surroundings were the perfect spot for the proposal.”

“Here come the girls!” The matching floral pyjamas made for such a cute picture.

The flower crowns (made by the bride herself!) looked so pretty on Katie’s flower girls.

Katie’s simple and elegant up-do meant the beaded bodice of the dress was undisturbed. Such a gorgeous look!

N’awh! Dads’ first looks are always one of the most special shots from the wedding.

The couple’s family were troopers, helpful in lending a hand to ensure Katie and James’ day was filled with personal, homemade touches. “Katie’s sister conducted the Gospel Choir that sang during the Mass. James’ aunts made the wedding cake and his cousin carved the cake stand. Katie’s brother and his girlfriend made the save-the-dates, invitations and booklets. Katie’s dad gathered and arranged the flowers for outside the church and along the church pews.”

The wedding was laid-back, fun and full of everyone’s favourite food. “The day was extremely personable and fun. From the ice- creams outside the church, to the outdoor drinks reception to the crisp sandwiches at 2am! We wanted our friends and family to enjoy our big day as much as us.” Crisp sandwiches? Sounds like our kind of party!

“I scream for ice-cream!” A post-ceremony sweet treat is always well-received.

The venue, Tinakilly House in Wicklow ticked all the boxes for Katie and James. It was high-impact but low-maintenance! “We chose Tinakilly because it had a fantastic sense of uniqueness about it. We loved how the pavilion had floor to ceiling windows and views over the sea. Although we both enjoy being creative, we did not want the added pressure of having to decorate an entire venue and we adored how Tinakilly needed very little additional touches to make it the perfect wedding venue.”

Such a stunning venue! Katie and James definitely chose well!

This vintage-inspired outdoor seating area was a lovely spot to catch up with friends– not to mention sit down to stop your feet from aching. We’ve all been there ladies!

When it came to adding unique elements to the wedding décor, Katie scoured bridal websites and Pinterest and found some amazing, yet doable, ideas. “I like to be artistic and really enjoyed creating a few little touches for the wedding day. Throughout the year I pinned a number of different ideas that I tried my best to recreate, or adapt to suit our wedding day.”she explained.

“We involved many of our family and friends in the entire process. It was great that so many of them were able and willing to help us out. Even if they thought I was daft (I was questioned why on earth I needed two milk churns at the wedding) they did their best to help us out!”

The maids dresses were simple and elegant. This colour is super flattering on all skin tones too, which makes it a great choice if you’re having  multiple bridesmaids.

A girl after my own heart! Katie made table names inspired by the couple’s favourite biscuits.

There’s nothing more romantic and nostalgic than carving your names in a tree, is there? I’m obsessed with the idea of using a carved tree trunk as a cake stand!

If wedding-planning is overwhelming to you, Katie has some advice for your approach; “The idea of planning a wedding can seem very daunting to some. Just take it step by step. We had over a year to plan the wedding and took each decision one at a time, instead of trying to complete everything at once and feeling overwhelmed by it. And most importantly – Do whatever suits you!”

Katie tells us that she’s a big advocate for the mini-moon if it isn’t feasible for you to take a full honeymoon right after the wedding; “After the wedding we had a few days away in Portugal. It was absolutely perfect. We both loved the chance to relax together and relive the big day. During the Easter Holidays we are going to South Africa and cannot wait!”
